Yellowstone Schools in the heart of Houston’s historic Third Ward is a unique education concept that combines private Christian education for pre-kindergarten to fifth grade and a public, college-prep charter school for grades 6 and up. M2L Associates was the landscape architect for a $30 million expansion that enabled the charter school to begin enrolling grades 9–12, adding 15 classrooms, learning centers, two gyms/multipurpose centers, a library, music room, art studio, innovation hub, green spaces, and age-appropriate playgrounds for ages 2–5 and age 5 and up.
Working with Kirksey Architecture, civil engineering firm Duplantis Design Group and project manager Turner Townsend, M2L designed vibrant, creative play areas with artful themes to complement the architecture. Surrounding pathways and landscaping enhance outdoor spaces for learning, gathering and hosting visitors. Thanks to a private–public agreement between the school and the city, the location continues to be a vibrant gathering place for its Third Ward neighbors, hosting an array of activities from community meetings, recreational activities, youth and senior events, and job fairs.
Houston Business Journal recognized the new campus with the 2024 Landmark Award for Education, an honor recognizing real estate projects that make a significant impact on Houston and help sculp the look, feel and image of the city.
