Winzer Park

Winzer Park, approximately 13 miles northwest of downtown Houston, was long considered an important park for recreation and gathering in the Acres Home community, but like many older and underserved Houston parks needed extensive updating and repairs. Originally named Carver Park and acquired by the city of Houston in 1978, the park was renamed in 1988 to honor HPD Officer Andrew Winzer, who was killed in the line of duty.

In recent years, a major park renovation was funded through numerous sources, including Houston Parks Department capital improvement programs and grants. Winzer Park was also one of 50 parks named in former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s 50/50 Park Partners program, a public–private initiative to improve Houston parks in underserved neighborhoods by partnering with companies and other community stakeholders.

The improvements for the new Winzer Park were extensive, adding a new splashpad, outdoor exercise areas featuring brightly colored, shaded sails, new picnic area and shelter, new fencing, an age-appropriate playground and equipment, and new furnishings throughout the grounds. Updated amenities include resurfaced tennis courts, widened walking trails, upgraded lighting and landscaping, and improved drainage and water detention.

What we’re doing today makes a safer city because it builds family, it builds that unity, that bonding. Kids know we’re investing in them. Families know we’re investing in them.
