Texas Southern University, located a few miles due south of downtown Houston, was founded in 1927 as a historically Black university and a century later is home to more than 8,600 students plus another 1,400 faculty and staff. The Spearman Technology Building, situated near a main campus entrance, opened in 1987 but was severely damaged and rendered unusable by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The original building was demolished to make room for a new-construction, expanded technology center that is now nearly 108,000 sq ft of space to allow consolidation of scattered science and technology programs.
M2L worked with Archi-Technics/3 to provide a landscape plan for the new construction, including design of lighting, irrigation and a new water feature. A central feature of the landscape plan was a main entrance plaza with special paving, lighting and trees to provide an open and welcoming campus entrance. The site layout and student pathways are designed to integrate with existing connections. Native plantings and new landscaping completed the project.
