Sunnyside Park Trail

Sunnyside Park Trail is a wide, concrete hike and bike trail that begins at Sunnyside Park on Bellfort Avenue in south Houston and runs to Johnson Library at Reed Road, connecting to neighborhood streets and two schools along the way. Located just outside of the 610 Loop and east of Texas SH 288, Sunnyside is one of the oldest African-American communities in south Houston and had a long history of being underserved by parks and greenspaces when the trail project came to fruition.

City planners and stakeholders wanted to create a network of walking and bike trails — or green corridors — by using existing easements and rights of way to connect residents to important destinations in Sunnyside, such as parks, the community center, schools and the library. Working closely with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, M2L provided a site master plan as well as trail and softscape design for the 5-acre site. The 0.8-mile Sunnyside Park Trail includes well-placed benches, shaded areas and low-maintenance plantings, and became a model for follow-on green corridors in the area.
