The Sims Bayou Greenway is an expansive network of hike and bike trails along Sims Bayou, beginning in southwest Houston and extending east near Hobby Airport and the Houston Ship Channel. Jointly owned by the Harris County Flood Control District and the city of Houston, the 10-foot-wide, concrete trail system is a long-term investment in multipurpose infrastructure that seeks to add and improve green spaces along Houston bayous, connect residents to nearby parks and community destinations, create a memorable experience, and encourage wellness for people and the environment.
Upon completion, city planners and developers look to achieve optimized resilience and mitigated flood risk, while cyclists, joggers and pedestrians will be able to enjoy a nearly 20-mile stretch from Blue Ridge County Park (near Hillcroft) to Milby Park (near Loop 610 and the Pasadena Freeway), with dramatic views of the Houston skyline and connections to landmarks like the Hill at Sims, Houston Sports Park and the Houston Botanic Garden.
M2L partnered with Walter P. Moore to complete the 5-mile segment known as Sections 3 and 4. M2L services included a site master plan with safe and sustainable design and layout following Harris County Flood Control rights of way and connecting numerous city parks and landmarks. Several bridges and grade transitions challenged the design, which feature native habitats for coastal grasses and migratory birds along the bayou. Today this well-traveled segment includes gateway features, bridges and new vistas while integrating seamlessly into the larger Sims Bayou trail system.
