Landscape and urban design for the setbacks and medians along a 3.5-mile stretch of Old Spanish Trial (OST, also known as US Hwy 90A) and Griggs Road in south Houston is the result of a multiyear, collaborative effort between the Greater Southeast Management District and the OST/Almeda Corridors Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ #7. M2L Associates developed a comprehensive master plan for three major corridors within the district, including the OST and Griggs Road corridor, under a Federal Highway Administration (FHA) grant. Additional funding phases were made possible by TxDOT-administered matching grants. Trees for Houston and further FHA grants completed the corridor design.
M2L’s design approach created a beautiful, safe and accessible streetscape by incorporating wider sidewalks, accessible ramps, median landscaping and pavers, street trees, bus stop seating areas, site furniture, and other pedestrian amenities. The project established a gateway landscape at the far west end of the corridor, near SH 288, featuring long, sweeping walls and native landscaping to welcome visitors entering the Houston Southeast District.
