Freeport, Texas is in southern Brazoria County where the Brazos River meets the Gulf of Mexico. Located just 60 miles south of Houston via Texas SH 288, Freeport is a popular port city and beach destination, with a stable local economy supported by nearby chemical plants and tourism. M2L Associates provided a landscape master plan and design services at this bustling intersection to update and modernize the area’s features while providing a welcoming gateway to the city. The wayfinding graphics and monuments are a blend of coastal and nautical themes as well as the influence of the region’s dependence on the oil and gas industry.
Because of the unique intersection of existing bridges, roads and waterways, the design team worked closely with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on all construction and design plans, preserving existing rights-of-way, bridges and other infrastructure while creating a safe, sustainable, long-lasting gateway for residents and visitors. A second phase of the project funded by a TxDOT Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant provided new landscaping improvements along an additional 1.5 miles of SH 288.
